From the Armor of Aviation to the Quiet of Clay
At 52, I became a ceramic artist. I’m self-taught, discovering form, texture, and balance through curiosity and hands-on experimentation. For decades, I worked in aviation, a male-dominated field that required an armor, a façade, a compartmentalized version of myself.
Discovering clay has been rediscovering what got sidelined. It's reconnected me to my feminine side, not in the conventional sense, but in finally creating space for delicacy, softness, and vulnerability without apology. I'm drawn to forms that hold both strength and gentleness: rough surfaces beside smooth, delicate edges with striking presence, flow and femininity.
After years of multitasking as a mom, wife, business owner, and career woman, working with clay is the only time my brain is completely silent. No chatter, no to-do lists. I get lost in the moment. The pieces are what emerges from that quiet.
My Philosophy
Working with clay, I explore forms that feel weightless and caught mid-movement, yet possess a quiet, enduring strength.
My work captures the gentle, flowing rhythms found in nature; the quiet resilience of water, the vulnerability of petals, the grace of things in motion. I approach the medium through curiosity and experimentation, learning far more from mistakes and discovering how far I can push the clay than from any prescribed method. Working this way allows my sculptures to look effortless, as if caught in a moment of dance.
This mirrors the essence of the feminine: visually delicate, thin, and expressive, yet holding enduring strength once fired. Through these sculptures, I invite viewers into a world where vulnerability is a form of grace, and softness is a powerful presence.
